Welcome to the website “Indian Life and Landscape by Western Artists (ILLWA)”

Its objective is to promote the interest in the art on Indian subjects by western artists during the period prior to 1900. These paintings provide an insight into the Indian culture and traditions of that time as seen through “western eyes”. The website was inspired by the exhibition on this subject held at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly Prince of Wales Museum of Western India) in Mumbai, India in 2008-09. The exhibition comprised 122 exhibits from the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and CSMVS. It was also accompanied by an illustrated book on the subject. The website provides information about the artists and related information. If you wish to join us as a “Friend of ILLWA” please email us on paulinerohatgi@illwa.org or pherozagodrej@illwa.org
